Red Yeast Rice (600mg) Overview
Red Yeast Rice is rice native to China that has been fermented by Monascus purpureus, a distinctive red yeast.
Red yeast rice has been studied extensively for its ability to lower cholesterol levels. Scientists believe that naturally-occurring substances called monocolins are responsible for the cholesterol lowering effects of Red yeast Rice. One monocolin, lovastatin, is believed to be used by the body to inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, a substance responsible for triggering cholesterol production. Lovastatin is actually the primary ingredient used in many prescription drugs for lowering high cholesterol. In addition to lovastatin, red yeast rice also contains sterols, isoflavones, and monounsaturated fatty acids, all of which are thought to help lower bad cholesterol (LDL).
